As part of securing Townsville City Councils water supply for health and regional prosperity, it was identified that the clarification process was hindered during certain weather events that affected the water quality in the Ross River Dam. BMD Constructions was awarded the contract to act as principal contractor for the Douglas Water Treatment Plant upgrade
To improve operations, Aquatec Maxcon, working under BMD Constructions, upgraded the plant by installing new lamella clarifiers in Modules 3 and 4 in 2023. These lamella clarifiers significantly reduce the raw water turbidity prior to filtration, allowing the downstream sand filters to operate at their full capacity during unfavourable weather conditions..
The full scope for the upgrade consisted of:
The key design parameters were:
Full compliance with modern water quality standards under the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines
Module 3 Improved plant capacity to 950 Litres of raw water per second
Module 4 Improved plant capacity to 1100 Litres of raw water per second
Enhanced plant flexibility and operational uptime
Upgrade was delivered during Covid-19 with uninterrupted water delivery to the community
